Google Pixel 4: Dual selfie shooters and a telephoto rear camera?

We saw the first massive Google Pixel 4 leak last month, with Google confirming the leak shortly thereafter. Now, it looks like the Pixel 4 XL has finally surfaced online, with renders showing dual selfie cameras and what appears to be a triple rear camera setup with a telephoto that is rumored to be 16 MP.

Front render: Dual selfie shooters

The leak was posted online by PriceBaba on OnLeaks and it shows a substantial top bezel on front hosting what looks like two cameras and another sensor. This sensor could either be a proximity sensor or a new sensor for rumored face unlock functionality. OnLeaks also notes that there’s a blank area on the right side of the top bezel, potentially housing the facial recognition sensors.

However, there is a noticeable missing feature – the gesture sensor. This is immediately presumed to be related to Google’s Project Soli initiative. Project Soli is a miniature radar that can pick up on minute hand gestures. It is a touch-free user interface that could be used to interact with wearables, radios, and other electronics. The project leaked last month and already rumored to come along the Google Pixel 4.

Going back, Google Pixel 4 also shows no fingerprint scanner neither front nor back. Therefore, it suggests that the company may be going with a head on commitment to face unlock or in-display fingerprint scanner.

Rear render: Triple camera

At the back lies two main cameras with what appears to be a much smaller camera above the two main shooters. The size suggests we’re not looking at a traditional shooter or ultra-wide-angle camera here, but rather something akin to a 3D ToF camera.

This supports what the XDA-Developers uncovered last week – a rear telephoto camera in the latest version of the Google Camera app. 9to5Google also discovered text within the app code that suggests a 16MP resolution for the new camera. The text specifically mentions resolutions of 4,656 x 3,496 (16.3MP), 4,656 x 3,492 (16.3MP), and 2,328 x 1,748 (4.07MP).

The outlet suggests that this might be error code related to the telephoto camera’s development. Sadly, this doesn’t guarantee that we’ll be seeing a 16MP telephoto camera on the Pixel 4.  This feature, however, would make for an impressive resolution on paper, as most telephoto shooters usually top out at 12MP. The increased resolution could potentially help with digital zoom, especially when combined with Google’s Super Res Zoom technology.

The Google Pixel 4 XL rear camera bump is smaller than the renders make it out to be. It adds that the Pixel 4 XL measures in at 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm, compared to the Pixel 3 XL‘s 158.0 x 76.7 x 7.9mm dimensions. So, you’re looking at a taller but narrower device than last year’s model if this leak is to be believed.

Lastly, the renders show a USB-C port and speaker grills at the bottom, and a volume rocker and white power button on the right. Unfortunately, there is no 3.5mm port and a Google Assistant key. This could mean the assistant could only be summoned via gestures, hopefully using Project Soli.
